Wolli Creek railway station is located along the Illawarra and Airport Lines and is 7.30km from Central. It serves the suburb of Wolli Creek and parts of Arncliffe. The station consists of one upper island platform and two lower side platforms with a concourse in between. Wolli Creek is served by T4 Eastern Suburbs & Illawarra Line, South Coast Line and T8 Airport & South Line trains.
Wolli Creek is staffed from 6:00am to 10:00pm everyday.[1]
History[]
Wolli Creek station was built as part of the Airport line opening on 21 May 2000. The name derives from a local creek branching from the Cooks River, and Wolli Junction is the name of the original junction point for the East Hills line from the Illawarra line at this site. In the initial concept for the Airport Line, no station was to be provided at this site, however the State Rail Authority decided to construct a station here as an interchange point with the new Airport line and the Illawarra line.
The station, unlike the others built on the line, was constructed with government finance and hence is owned by RailCorp. In the initial concept and design phase, the station was named North Arncliffe, however this was changed to Wolli Creek in 1998. During construction, a set of points allowing the cross-over of trains from the Illawarra local lines to the Illawarra main lines was moved further south. Wolli Creek was officially declared a suburb a year later, and residential redevelopment occurred in the 2010's, with construction of highrise apartments, a shopping strip and a Woolworths/Dan Murphy's supermarket and liquor store.
A secondary motivation was to promote urban renewal around the station site. The station is located on a former industrial site and siding, and the area around the station was occupied by light industrial businesses when the station opened. Since the station's opening, the suburb has been significantly redeveloped with high density housing. As part of this development, the Airport line platforms have been partially covered over.
There have been several proposals to build platforms for the Illawara Local lines to increase capacity on the Illawara line. However this is difficult because a link to the East Hills line branches off the local lines where the platforms should be. Like many other projects, these platforms are unlikely to be ever built.
Platforms and Services[]
Wolli Creek is located at a grade separated junction between the Airport (New Southern) and the Illawara railway lines. The Airport line passes below and has two side platforms (numbered 1 and 2). There is also one island platform (with two faces) on the Illawara line, serving the Main tracks. The other two tracks of the Illawara line (named Local) do not have platforms.
