Waterfall railway station is on the Illawarra railway line of the Sydney Trains network. It serves the suburb of Waterfall. The station is located near Princes Highway and Kooraban Street.
Waterfall is staffed 24 hours everyday.[1]
History[]
The station opened on 9 March 1886 as Waterfalls, being renamed later in the year. It served as the line's terminus until it was extended to Scarborough in 1887. When the line was duplicated from Hurstville on 12 December 1890, the station was relocated northwards. In 1897 a locomotive depot opened.
On 4 May 1905 the station moved 600 metres north to its present location.
Accidents and incidents[]
On 20 December 1994, a shunting accident involving two empty S sets saw one train jack-knife onto the platform, demolishing the concrete pedestrian bridge.
South of the station is the site of the Waterfall train disaster, an accident that claimed the lives of the driver and six passengers on 31 January 2003, when Tangara set G7, operating a South Coast line service, derailed. G7 was later written off in its entirety in 2005, with all four carriages (OD6831, ON5816, ONL5866, OD6832) being scrapped.
Upgrade[]
Under the Transport Access Program, work commenced in early 2014 to improve accessibility around the station. Major improvements include: a new Concourse linked to the Kooraban Street overbridge, an additional lift to the platform, increased platform height with toiletry and new weather protection canopies. The project also added a 'kiss and ride' facility as well as resurfaced the overbridge footpath.[2]
Major works were completed in July of the following year.[3]
Configuration[]
Waterfall railway station is located on Kooraban Street, near the Princes Highway. Lifts, a set of stairs, and footbridge connect to the platforms below. As of 2015, Waterfall also has lifts available on the station entrance and footbridge.
Waterfall is the only station on the Illawarra Line's Waterfall/South Coast branch to consist of an island platform instead of two side platforms.
Waterfall has sidings on both sides of the main line just north of the station for stabling trains and a loop track for passing trains on either side of the platforms.
Platforms and Services[]
The station is the terminus for the T4 Illawara line's Waterfall branch. Some South Coast line trains also stop.
