The Walgett railway line is a partially closed railway line in north-western New South Wales. It branches from the Main North line at Narrabri and passes through the towns of Wee Waa and Burren before ending in the town of Walgett. There is a partially closed branch at Burren to Pokataroo.
History[]
A line through the area was first proposed in 1894, finally being discussed in Parliament in 1900.[1] The line opened in stages between 1903 and 1908.[2] There was a proposal to connect the Gwabegar line to the Walgett line at Burren Junction in 1913, and although approved, this connection was never constructed. The line was damaged by flood damage on 12 November 1987 between Walgett station and Walgett Wheat Terminal, and was never repaired, with the section closed.[3]
Services[]
The line remains in use for grain haulage only.
Passenger services on the line have ceased, with coach services now following part of the line between Narrabri and Burren Junction. These services are part of NSW TrainLink's Regional North Western Line,
The line is controlled by John Holland Rail as part of the Country Rail Network.
