Victoria Street railway station is a station located on the Hunter Line. The station consists of 2 platforms in a single island formation. It is the main station for the suburb of East Maitland and also serves Major shopping precinct "Stockland Green Hills", Maitland High School and surrounding suburbs of Tenambit and Morpeth with buses. along with East Maitland station.
History[]
The station opened on 8th April 1857 as East Maitland. It was originally a side platform. It was only open for eleven months, closing on 9th March 1858. During this time period, the station served as the terminus of the Hunter Line from Newcastle. The station reopened in 1877 and was renamed Victoria Street because there was a new station built with the name East Maitland.
A new waiting shed was built in 1878. In 1899, the platforms were extended. In 1914, the station was converted from a side platform to an island platform, and a footbridge was built. On 2 April 1999, the station was added to the NSW State Heritage Register. [1] [2][3]
From 2017 to 2018, Victoria Street underwent an accessibility upgrade as part of the Transport Access Program. Key benefits included three new lifts, new canopies, refurbishment of the heritage platform building, improvements to the interchange areas and improved signage and lighting. [4]
