St Leonards is a station on the North Shore railway line of the Sydney Trains network. It serves the suburb of St Leonards, and nearby areas including Greenwich, Naremburn and Crows Nest. Royal North Shore Hospital is also nearby. The station entry is off Pacific Highway, with stairs and lifts connecting between street level, the concourse and platforms.
St Leonards is staffed from 6:00am to 10:00pm everyday.[1]
History[]
St Leonards station opened on 1 January 1890 as the terminus station of the North Shore line from Hornsby. On 1 May 1893, the line was extended south to Milsons Point.
The station once had a number of sidings north of it to serve nearby industries. Currently, only one siding remains on the up side. It is unwired and rarely used, with the points being manually operated from a lever released by the signaller.
In August 1989, the station was relocated to a temporary station south of the Pacific Highway to allow the site to be redeveloped. After the redevelopment encountered financial problems and remained dormant for a number of years, the new station was not completed until February 2000 as part of The Forum shopping plaza development.
The new station was built with two island platforms to allow extra lines to be laid as part of a plan to quadruple the line, with the platforms numbered accordingly. This plan was scrapped and so only the centre two platforms are in use now.
Platforms and Services[]
The station consists of two side platforms, and serves trains on the T1 North Shore and Western Line and T9 Northern Line, as well as services to Gosford and Wyong during the peak.
