Rosehill Gardens Light Rail station is an upcoming station on the Parramatta Light Rail, serving the Sydney suburb of Camellia, as well as Rosehill Gardens Racecourse. Prior to January 2020, it was served by the Carlingford line of the Sydney Trains network.
History[]
Camellia station opened on 21 January 1885 as Subiaco, together with the first section of the Carlingford railway line. It was renamed Camellia on 14 September 1901. It had a single 4-car long platform.
The station was served by passenger services on the Carlingford Line towards Carlingford and Clyde, which was eventually operated by Sydney Trains and numbered T6.
Camellia was one of the least used stations on the Sydney Trains network. There was an average of 70 passengers boarding at Camellia in 2014.
Light Rail Conversion[]
The station closed on 6th January 2020 as part of stage 1 of the Parramatta Light Rail project. It was be demolished and will be replaced with two new low-level light rail platforms. Route 535 buses are serving the station while the new station is construction. It will serve stage 1 light rail services travelling between Westmead and Carlingford. Stage 2 services to Olympic Park may also serve the station. Due to the name "Camellia" having ties to its former industrial site nature, the station may possibly be renamed with the light rail upgrade in an attempt to revitalise the area.
In November 2022, the station was renamed as Rosehill Gardens, in order to indicate its role as serving the aforementioned racecourse.
Trivia[]
- Camelia was one of the quietest stations in Sydney because it was located in an industrial suburb with a total of zero residents
