Rooty Hill railway station is located along the Main Western railway line and is roughly 40.9km from Sydney CBD.[1] It serves the suburb of Rooty Hill. The station consists of two islands (forming 4 platforms) connected by an overhead pedestrian footbridge. Rooty Hill is serviced by Sydney Trains T1 Western Line services.
Rooty Hill is the 70th most patronised railway station in Sydney (out of a total of 176 stations), with an average of 3390 passengers boarding per day.
History[]
Rooty Hill station was opened on December 23rd 1861 with 3 platforms, and a 4th opening on January 1st 1862.[2]
In the 1940’s major works were completed on the station. This included the replacement of platform buildings, construction of a pedestrian footbridge, and the addition of a level crossing. These upgrades were made in conjunction with the line quadruplication between St Marys and Lidcombe, in order to increase supply transport capacity during the second world war.
In 1981, the level crossing was closed to traffic and pedestrians and was dismantled shortly after. Between 1990 and 2001 further refurbishments were made including an overhaul to the footbridge, and the addition of platform canopies and awnings on both Islands.[3]
Upgrade[]
In 2018, work began on a station upgrade under the Transport Access Program. Improvements include a new pedestrian walk-bridge and stairways, lifts to the platform and entrances, and new platform canopies on both islands. Work also began on a new multi-storey car park with 748 parking spaces. Initially planned to have 500 spaces, community feedback led to the approval of two additional levels on top of the preceding four storeys.[4][5] Other additions include the replacement of CityRail era station signs. Rooty Hill was the last suburban station on the Sydney Trains network to receive the new orange signs.
The upgrade was completed in February 2020. The commuter car park is now open, and is one of the first in the network to feature dedicated electric vehicle charging stations. 10 spaces are reserved for this purpose.[6]
Platforms and Services[]
Rooty Hill is served by T1 Western services, at a frequency of 4 trains per hour in each direction at most times, boosted to 10 trains per hour during the PM peak only.[7]
