Riverstone is a station and passing loop on the Richmond branch line, located 46km from Central. It serves the outer western suburb of Riverstone. The station consists of two side platforms, linked by a level crossing. Riverstone is served by T1 Western and T5 Cumberland Line trains in both directions.
The station is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.[1]
Configuration[]
The station opened in 1864 upon completion of the rail line to Richmond. The original railway station was made of wood and lasted until 1886, when the station was rebuilt with bricks. The line was electrified to Riverstone in 1975. The configuration has changed several times since it opened:
- There were once a number of goods sidings on the western side of the station. One of these sidings still exists, however it is rarely used.
- There was a dock platform on the eastern side of the station to allow the shuttles from Richmond to terminate. The outline is still visible, but the commuter carpark has been built over the tracks.
- There was originally no platform on the main line. Platform 2 was added with the electrification works.
- The signal box is now for emergency use only. At other times, the station is controlled by Blacktown Signal Box.
Upgrade[]
As part of the Transport Access Program, Riverstone received a station upgrade. Improvements included re-grading the internal ramp near the ticket office and construction of a new ramp. Construction spanned from November 2013 to April 2014.[2]
Services[]
Until 1992, Riverstone was the terminating point for electric passenger services to and from Sydney. Prior to 1991, passengers would change for a diesel train (a 620/720 railcar in later years) to complete their journey to Richmond. In 1991, electrification was completed to Richmond and the train was replaced by a two-car L set. After an upgrade to the electric supply in 1992, through trains operated between Sydney and Richmond, with Riverstone becoming a rarely used intermediate terminus.
The station is served by two trains per hour each way, with additional trains during weekday peak hours.
