Punchbowl railway station is a station on the T3 Bankstown Line of the Sydney Trains network, located in the suburb of Punchbowl. Station entry is accessed through stairs from a footbridge, with exits to Punchbowl Road and The Boulevarde.
Punchbowl is staffed from 6:00am to 7:00pm on weekdays, and 8:00am to 4:00pm on weekends and public holidays. [1]
History[]
Punchbowl station opened on 14 April 1909, when the Bankstown line was extended from Belmore to Bankstown.
Until it closed in the early 1990s, the Punchbowl Maintenance Depot lay to the north-west of the station.
Sydney Metro conversion[]
Punchbowl will cease operation of Sydney Trains heavy rail services by the end of 2023 as the Sydenham to Bankstown bracket of the Bankstown Line will undergo conversion to serve the Sydney Metro City & Southwest single-deck driverless rapid-transit rail network. The station will close for 6-7 months in late 2023 in order to undergo work while it reopens as a metro-only station in 2024.
Starting in December 2019, the Bankstown Line stations between Sydenham and Bankstown will also undergo partial closures during the December/January school holiday periods (including New Year’s Eve) up until 2023. These closures will be for minor preliminary works before the longer closure in 2023.
The original EIS (Environmental Impact Statement) proposed substantial works to the station. It was
proposed that the island platform be replaced with two straight side platforms and the concourse demolished and rebuilt slightly to the east.[1] A more detailed design was released in March 2021. The existing concourse and platforms will now be kept, with mechanical gap fillers added to alleviate the platform curve issue and the platforms resurfaced. As with all other metro stations, platform screen doors (for safety) and lifts (to meet DDA requirements) will be installed.[2]
Platforms and Services[]
Punchbowl is served by all stops services on the Bankstown line, usually at a frequency of 4 trains per hour, with additional trains in the peak.
