Penrith railway station is located along the Main Western railway, 55.1km from Sydney CBD.[1] The station consists of 1 island (forming 2 platforms) and 1 side platform, accessed by a lift-enabled overhead concourse. Penrith is serviced by T1 Western and Blue Mountains Line trains in both directions.
The station serves the residential, industrial and shopping areas around the Penrith area. In addition, the station also has a large bus interchange, as well as a large stabling yard to the west on both sides of the main line.
Penrith is the 29th most patronised railway station in Sydney (out of a total of 176 stations), with an average of 7860 passengers boarding per day.
Upgrade[]
In early 2016, plans for a station upgrade were approved with major works beginning later in the year.[2] The project, initiated under the Transport Access Program, aimed to "provide a better customer experience and increase capacity for future growth."[3] Major improvements included: a new station concourse with new stairs and canopies, new accessible amenities and an improved interchange area. The upgrade was completed and opened to the public in November 2017.
Penrith Station also received a new, multi-storey Commuter Car Park in 2017. It was constructed over 10 months and added 450 additional car parks to the then 500+ spaces.[4] Currently, Penrith Station has a total of 1,170 parking spaces available for commuters.[5]
Platforms and services[]
The station has one turnback platform (number 1), used for terminating trains from the east. The station also has two platforms (number 2 and 3) serving the double track main line. All three platforms are long enough for eight car V sets.
The station is served by four T1 services and one Blue Mountains service per hour at most times. Additional services operate during the peak, with less on late nights.[6][7]
