Panania railway station is a small station on the East Hills Line of the Sydney Trains suburban network. It has a single island platform, with faces on both tracks of the East Hills line.

History[]

The station opened on 21 December 1931, when the East Hills line was extended as a single track, unelectrified line from Kingsgrove to East Hills. Over the following years, the line was duplicated and electrified.

In October 2011, construction finished for a transport interchange upgrade at Panania. Upgrades were made to bus stops, footpaths, 'kiss and ride' drop off zones and a taxi zone.[1]

A few years later, Panania received another station upgrade. Key benefits included three new lifts and stairs, new canopies, new wayfinding signage, refurbishment of the heritage platform, new toilet facilities and improvements to bicycle facilities, interchange areas, lighting and CCTV surveillance. Construction was completed in July 2018.[2]

Both upgrades were part of the Transport Access Program.

Platforms and services[]

Current service patterns consist of four trains per hour at all times, except for late nights and early mornings.

Previously Panania was served by both express and all stops trains, however as of October 2009 all stops services have now been cut short to Revesby. This has resulted in reduced travel times of 5 to 10 minutes between Panania and the City, as now only express trains stop.

Panania rarely sees freight trains pass, unless trackwork is in progress on the Main South Line, between Glenfield and Granville. During these trackwork times, train services will divert via the East Hills Line or freight lines to reach the Main South.
