The NSW TrainLink version of the CAF Civity is an upcoming class of new regional trains that will replace the ageing XPT (circa 1982), Xplorer (circa 1993) and Endeavour (circa 1994) fleets.
Momentum Trains, a consortium of Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles (CAF), DIF Infrastructure and Pacific Partnerships, was awarded the contract to construct the new regional trains, as well as a new maintenance centre in Dubbo. [1] The expected cost of constructing the new trains will be $1.26 billion. [2]
The new regional trains, planned to contain a fleet of 29 sets, are expected to enter service from late 2025-2027. They will serve on the intercity Hunter and Southern Highlands lines, as well as the South Coast line branch from Kiama to Bomaderry and the Blue Mountains branch from Lithgow to Bathurst to replace Endeavour railcar service. With their role as the successor to the XPT and Xplorer, they will also run to other regional areas including, Dubbo, Grafton, Casino, Armidale, Moree, Griffith and Broken Hill, and further beyond to Canberra, Brisbane and Melbourne. These regional destinations will also have connecting coach services.
The Next Generation Regional Fleet will be the first trains on the NSW network to use bi-mode technology. This allows the trains to utilise the ability to draw power using a pantograph when travelling on electrified lines.
