Martin Place railway station is located along the Eastern Suburbs line and is 2.10km from Sydney CBD.[1] It serves the northern Sydney CBD. The station consists of 1 island (forming 2 platforms) and is accessed from Elizabeth Street and Martin Place. Martin Place is serviced by T4 Eastern Suburbs and Illawarra and South Coast line trains in both directions.

Martin Place is staffed 24 hours everyday.[2]

History[]

Martin Place station, along with the rest of the Eastern Suburbs line, was officially opened on 23rd June 1979 by the Premier of New South Wales, Neville Wran.

Configuration[]

Martin Place station is located in the Sydney CBD, opposite Elizabeth Street. The station is named after Martin Place, where the entrances are also located. There is also a shopping plaza integrated into the station.

The station is located underground and has a single island platform. Martin Place received an accessibility upgrade in 2011, with new lifts and wheelchair accessible toilets.

A turnback is also placed east of the station, between the running lines, allowing eastbound trains to terminate.

Sydney Metro Upgrade[]

In 2024, in addition to its current lines, Martin Place will also serve the Sydney Metro City & Southwest network, where it will be situated between two new Metro-exclusive stations, Barangaroo and Pitt Street. Construction is currently underway for an extra tunnel with escalators going deeper underground to the new Metro platforms, allowing the station to become an interchange point between Sydney Metro and Sydney Trains services. The Metro platforms will be in a configuration to have one in each tunnel, which will each be accessed from an escalator and lift.
