Lithgow railway station is a station on the Main West line of the NSW TrainLink intercity network, serving the town of Lithgow in the Central West area of New South Wales. The station has a single island platform; platform 1 is for 'Up' (towards Sydney) trains, and platform 2 is for 'Down' (away from Sydney) trains, as is the convention in NSW. The station is located in a cutting and is staffed and equipped with lifts for disabled access.
History[]
The station opened at a different site in June 1877. In 1880, the line was duplicated. On 9 March 1925, it moved to a site 430 metres west, which is the current location. The original site's platform is still intact. The line was electrified in 1957. The overhead station offices and footbridge was constructed c.1993. Around this time, a lift was installed at the new ramp. The station was added to the NSW State Heritage Register on 30 August 2013. [1] [2]
In 2014, Lithgow received a new station canopy. The new steel canopies were installed on the station platform to provide better protection for customers against rain and sun exposure. This was part of the Transport Access Program.[3]
Services[]
Lithgow is served by one train each way every two hours in off-peak, with additional services during peak hours. It is the terminus of the Blue Mountains intercity line, trains used to arrive on platform 2 to allow passengers to disembark before shunting forwards, then reversing into platform 1 to return to Sydney. Nowadays, trains can terminate on platform 2 can reverse straight back towards Sydney using a cross-over at the near Eskbank station (some trains still do the reversing onto platform 1 to allow other freight and NSW TrainLink trains to pass through).
The station is also served by limited services to Bathurst (also classed as Blue Mountains Line services and known as the Bathurst Bullet) and NSW TrainLink Regional Western services to Dubbo (daily XPT) and Broken Hill (weekly Xplorer). Various NSW TrainLink coach services (also part of the Regional Western line) depart from outside of the station.
