Green Square railway station is on the New Southern railway line of the Sydney Trains network. It serves the suburbs of Alexandria, Waterloo and Zetland. The station is fully wheelchair accessible.

Green Square is staffed from 5:00am to 11:30pm everyday.[1]

History[]

Green Square station opened on 21 May 2000 when the Airport line opened from Central to Wolli Creek. Like other stations on the line, Green Square was built and is operated by the Airport Link Company as part of a public–private partnership.

Prior to March 2011, passengers were required to pay an access fee to use the station. The access fee was removed after the State Government reached an agreement with the Airport Link Company to pay the fee at Green Square and Mascot stations on behalf of passengers. Patronage increased by around 70% at the two stations in the months following the removal of the fee. By 2018, patronage was growing at an annual rate of around 2 percent, leading to overcrowding at peak times.

Green Square station also made an appearance in the music video for Marvin Priest's song Own This Club.

Trivia[]

  • Green Square’s TfNSW stop number (201710) along with the number of the eastern entrance’s bus stop (201715) are technically incorrect, as the actual postcode for Alexandria (the station’s location) is 2015. These numbers are likely due to the station being located on the border of Alexandria, Waterloo and Zetland, with the latter two suburbs having 2017 as their shared postcode. The bus stop on the western entrance uses the correct postcode for Alexandria in its number (201511).

Configuration[]

Green Square is an underground station with 3 levels:

Level Description

There are escalators, lifts and stairs between each of levels, except for the Botany Rd east exit, which has no escalators.
