Granville is a railway station on the Main Suburban railway line of the Sydney Trains network, serving the Sydney suburb of the same name. The station is served by both Sydney Trains's T1 and T2 lines and has traditionally served as a transfer station between these two lines, a role that has been diluted somewhat since the opening of the Cumberland Line in 1996 and timetable changes since then.
It is located next to the Granville Bus Interchange.
Granville is staffed 24 hours everyday.[1]
History[]
Granville Station opened on 2 July 1860 as Parramatta Junction, and is close to the original terminus of the first railway line in New South Wales, named the Main Suburban line, which was completed in 1855. Granville Junction lies immediately to the west of the station and is where the Main Suburban splits into the Main West and Main South lines, now referred to as the Old Main South since the main line was diverted via Regents Park. On 1 September 1880, Parramatta Junction was renamed Granville.
On 18 January 1977, the Granville railway disaster, Australia's worst rail disaster, occurred resulting in the death of 83 people, about 200 m west of the station. A memorial plaque now stands on the corner of the bridge at Carlton Street and Railway Parade, near the site of the disaster.
In 1996, the "Y Link' track between Harris Park and Merrylands stations opened, allowing direct services between the Main West and Old Main South lines. A new line, the Cumberland line, was created, which ran via this link. However, there were very few services on this line, so Granville continued to serve as an interchange.
In 2013, a new timetable was introduced, which saw the Cumberland line get a frequent service. As a result, Granville is no longer a major interchange and most T1 services now skip Granville.
As part of the Transport Access Program, Granville station received a Transport Interchange Upgrade. This upgrade included two new commuter cark parks, providing a total of about 60 additional car spaces, and also received a bus interchange upgrade, new toilets, lighting, CCTV, landscaping and footpaths. The upgrade was completed in January 2015.[2]
Platforms[]
Granville is serviced by T2 Leppington services 7 days a week, and T2 Parramatta services on weekdays only. On weekends, the station is also serviced by T1 Western Line trains to and from Penrith, with Richmond services continuing to bypass.
The station has two island platforms, with platforms 1-2 facing the Main tracks and platforms 3-4 facing the Suburban tracks. The platforms are linked to an overhead concourse with exits on both sides of the rail corridor.
