North Strathfield is a station on the Main North railway line of the Sydney Trains network. It serves the Sydney suburb of North Strathfield. Station entry is from Queen Street (main entrance) and George Street (pathway that connects to Platform 3).

North Strathfield is staffed from 6:00am to 7:00pm on weekdays, and 8:00am to 4:00pm on weekends and public holidays.[1]

History[]

North Strathfield station opened on 9 June 1918 as an island platform with two faces. In 1924, a third platform was added on the western side. It is the first station on the Main Northern line after it branches from the Main Suburban line at Strathfield.

Although the primary, eastern, connection between the Main Northern and Main Suburban lines is from North Strathfield and Strathfield, a secondary, western, connection exists between North Strathfield and Homebush. This connection is mainly used by freight trains but is occasionally used by passenger trains travelling to Olympic Park station during trackwork or for major events at Sydney Olympic Park.

To the east of the station lay a passing loop. This had been taken out of use, but in June 2015 was recommissioned as part of the construction of a dive south of the station as part of the Northern Sydney Freight Corridor project.

In August 2011, construction began on a transport interchange upgrade at North Strathfield as part of the Transport Access Program. Improvements included a new shelter on a walkway, new "kiss and ride" zones and upgrading footpaths. Construction finished in late 2012.[2]

North Strathfield received an accessibility upgrade as part of the Transport Access program. Construction of new lifts and a new footbridge started in July 2019. The new lifts were later opened in November that year.

Sydney Metro Upgrade[]

As part of the proposed Sydney Metro West rapid transit rail project, a further two platforms will be built to the east of the existing station to serve Sydney Metro's automated single-deck Alstom Metropolis trains. Two additional Metro-only platforms will be added adjacent to the station, with a new entrance to be constructed at Queen Street for improved accessibility.

Construction[]

The following is the construction timeframe for stage one works: [3]

  • Enabling and demolition works: Q1 2022
  • Station excavation: Q2 2022 - Q2 2023

Configuration[]

North Strathfield station is located on Queen Street in North Strathfield. The station consists of one island platform (1 and 2) and one side platform (3).

Platforms and Services[]

The station is served by T9 Northern Line services, with a train every 15 minutes in each direction at most times. As North Strathfield is skipped by express services, there is no service to Hornsby during the afternoon peak - customers must change at Rhodes.
