Fairy Meadow railway station is a station located on the South Coast Line. The station consists of 2 platforms, in a double side formation. Access to the station is provided from Elliotts Road. The station serves the northern Wollongong suburb of Fairy Meadow.
History[]
The station opened on 21st June 1887 with the name Cramsville, then being a single platform on a single track line. On 3rd October 1888 the name was changed to Para Meadow. A goods siding being added on 6th May 1891. It was renamed Balgownie on 13th December 1909. Another platform was added on 27th May 1923 when the line between Bellambi and Mt Pleasant (between Fairy Meadow and Nth Wollongong) was duplicated. It was again renamed to its present name on 22nd January, 1956.
An upgrade at Fairy Meadow is currently under construction to improve accessibility, as part of the Transport Access Program. Key benefits include two new lifts, upgrades to station pathways and ramps, and upgrades to CCTV, lighting and wayfinding. Works are expected to be completed by late 2020.[1]
Platforms and Services[]
Fairy Meadow is mostly served by local services operating between Waterfall/Thirroul and Port Kembla only. Most trains to/from Sydney pass through without stopping.
Both platforms are approximately 155m long, which is just long enough for 8 OSCAR carriages, so it is not marked as a short platform station. However, back when V sets were in use on the South Coast line the station was marked as SP6 (short platform - alight from rear 6 cars).
