Erskineville railway station is on the Illawara railway line of the Sydney Trains network. It serves the suburb of Erskineville, as well as parts of Newtown. The station has two entrances off Erskineville Road and Bridge St.
Erskineville is staffed from 6:00am to 7:00pm on weekdays, and 8:00am to 4:00pm on weekends and public holidays.[1]
History[]
The original Erskineville station, situated on the north side of Erskineville Road, opened on 15 October 1884 as part of the construction of the Illawarra line to Hurstville. A new station, constructed on the south side of the overbridge, opened on 16 June 1912. The lines through Erskineville were quadruplicated on 15 June 1913 with the current arrangement of platforms.
To the west of the station, lie two incomplete platforms. They were originally built in the 1970s as part of the construction of the Eastern Suburbs line when the alignment between Sydenham and Erskineville was expanded to accommodate six tracks. This was abandoned as a cost-cutting exercise. The CityRail Clearways Project envisaged reviving this plan, with stopping trains serving only the newly completed western platforms. However, this project was cancelled in November 2008.
Immediately north of Erskineville, the Eastern Suburbs line emerges from underground to join the Illawarra line. This connection opened in 1979.
As part of the Transport Access Program, Erskineville received an accessibility[2] upgrade, with all 4 platforms made fully wheelchair accessible. Due to space constraints, a lift could not be installed from the Erskineville Road entrance to platforms 2-3 or 4. Instead one was installed from Erskineville Road to platform 1, and a new footbridge, with lifts to all 4 platforms, was built further south. A new entrance from Bridge St onto platform 4 was also built to complement the new footbridge. The new lifts, footbridge and station entrance were opened in November 2023.[3]
As part of the Sydney Metro project, the Bankstown Line will be converted to a rapid transit single-deck metro railway line with a new underground line north of Sydenham that will bypass Erskineville, with the line instead going to a new metro-only station at Waterloo. Erskineville, along with St Peters, will continue to be served by added stops on either the T4 and/or T8 lines. Customers travelling towards the existing Bankstown Line's converted metro stations will need to interchange at Sydenham.
Platforms and Services[]
Erskineville has four platforms in a 2 side, 1 island configuration. The western pair of platforms are numbered 1-2 and face the Illawara Local tracks, while the eastern pair of platforms are numbered 3-4 and face the Illawara (Main) tracks.
Historically, the station was served by Bankstown, East Hills and Illawarra services, however since the early 1990s it has only been served by the former. Currently, only some Bankstown line services stop at Erskineville. There are usually 4 trains per hour in each direction, being boosted to 6tph towards the City in the morning peak only.
