Coniston is a station located on the South Coast Line. The station consists of 2 platforms, in a double side formation. Access to the station is provided from Gladstone Avenue and Bridge Street. South of the station, the line splits into two branches, with the main line continuing to Kiama and the south-eastern branch to Port Kembla.
History[]
Calls for a station to be constructed at this site (then under the name Mount Drummond) began in 1915, while the Port Kembla branch was under construction.[1] However, when the branch was completed in 1916, and was opened on 1 April 1916. It was announced that a station would not be built, as the intention was for the Port Kembla branch to be for freight trains only.[2] Passenger trains began running on the line in 1920, but even though there wasn't a platform at the site yet, passengers started getting on and off at this location due to the need to stop to exchange a staff. [3]
Mount Drummond Station closed on 29 April 1923. It was renamed to Coniston and was re-oepned on 1 November 1925 and moved following duplication of the branch line on 20 May 1941. [4]
