Concord West railway station is on the Main Northern railway line of the Sydney Trains network. It serves the suburb of Concord West, and parts of Liberty Grove.
Concord West is staffed from 6:00am to 7:00pm on weekdays, and 8:00am to 4:00pm on weekends and public holidays.[1]
History[]
Concord West station was opened on 1 September 1887 as Concord. In March 1892, a second platform was added when the Main Northern line was duplicated. In June 1909, it was renamed Concord West. In 1911, a third line was laid to the west of the station and a signal box added, with a platform face added by 1940.
During the 2000 Olympics, Concord West was used as an alternate station to access Sydney Olympic Park for services from the Central Coast, with the platforms being extended to enable intercity trains to make an additional stop. A temporary footbridge and an extra station exit were also provided, but were removed after the Olympics.
For a time, platform 4 was used as the Sydney stopping point for the now-defunct Great South Pacific Express.
A fourth track, named the Up Relief, was laid to the east of the existing tracks as part of the Northern Sydney Freight Corridor project. This new track allowed freight trains to pass under the Main North tracks when turning onto the freight line. Previously, freight trains had to use a crossover onto the Down Relief just north of the station, which blocked trains on the Down North Main.
As part of these works, the Up North Main platform was converted to an island platform, to create a platform for the Up Relief line. The new platform (now numbered as platform 1) opened on 9 June 2015 and the existing platforms were renumbered. A new overhead concourse with lifts opened on 26 October 2014, replacing the existing concourse.
Configuration[]
The station has entrances with both stairs and lifts from Queen Street and King Street, leading to an overhead concourse that connects all 4 platforms. The station is fully wheelchair accessible. The station consists of two island platforms (1-2 and 3-4).
Platforms 1 and 4 face the Up/Down Relief, which is mainly used by freight trains turning onto the freight line at Strathfield, while platforms 2-3 face the Up/Down Main North.
Services[]
The station is served by trains on the T9 Northern Line, usually at a frequency of 4 trains per hour. As express services skip Concord West, there is no service to Hornsby during the afternoon peak - customers must change at Rhodes.
