Carramar railway station is on the Bankstown Line of the Sydney Trains network. It serves the suburb of Carramar. Station entry is accessed through a pathway from Carramar Avenue, to a footbridge with stairs connecting to the platform below.

Carramar is staffed from 6:00am to 2:00pm on weekdays only.[1]

History[]

Carramar station opened on 8 October 1924 when the Main South line was extended from Regents Park to Cabramatta. The station was originally called South Fairfield, before it was renamed to Carramar on 1 July 1926. To the south of the station lies the Southern Sydney Freight Line that opened in January 2013.

Historically Carramar was served by services from the city and Lidcombe operating to Liverpool. This changed in the early 2000s, when most services to Liverpool were altered to operate via Bankstown. Today Carramar is served by T3 Bankstown line services terminating at Liverpool and three Liverpool - City via Strathfield services on weekdays.

The axing of the Liverpool via Regents Park route on the Inner West Line in 2013 has naturally been criticised, with petitions being pushed by activist groups Restore Inner West Line [2] and Save T3 Bankstown Line [3], due to the Sydenham to Bankstown corridor being converted for Sydney Metro and leaving stations west of Bankstown with no train access to the City without forced interchanges at Bankstown (Metro), Cabramatta (T2 Leppington Line) or Lidcombe (T1 Western Line and T2 Leppington Line). For customers on the Sefton to Carramar corridor, they could also face potential interchanges at Birrong should they want to change at Lidcombe.

Carramar was expected to close down permanently in 2024 due to the opening of Sydney Metro City & Southwest, with feeder buses originally planned to permanently replace all T3 Bankstown Line trains between BankstownLidcombe and Cabramatta. The plan was rejected as of 4 February 2020, with Carramar to be served by direct City Circle to Liverpool services that will divert via Regents Park instead of Bankstown.
