Birrong railway station is on the Bankstown Line of the Sydney Trains network. It serves the suburb of Birrong. Station entry is through a set of stairs from the Avalon St overpass.

Birrong is staffed from 6:00am to 7:00pm on weekdays only.[1]

History[]

Birrong station opened on 16 July 1928, when the Bankstown line was extended from Bankstown to Regents Park.

In the early 2020s, the Avalon St entrance at Birrong was replaced with a wheelchair-accessible one as part of a station upgrade under the Transport Access Program. Other upgrades included an accessible toilet and parking. Construction of the project began in July 2020 and was completed in July 2021.[2][3]

Configuration[]

Birrong has a single island platform, with faces on both tracks of the Bankstown line.

To the north of the station lies Sefton Park (triangle) Junction. Trains can turn onto either direction on the Main South line (towards Cabramatta or Lidcombe). The Southern Sydney Freight Line also passes under the junction.

Platforms and Services[]

Birrong is served by both the Lidcombe and Liverpool branches of the Bankstown line. Train frequency varies between 4tph (weekends/nights), 6tph (weekday offpeak), 8tph (peak). As it is the last station before the two branches separate, Birrong is an interchange station for the few passengers travelling between Lidcombe and Liverpool.

Birrong is shown as the destination on newer trains travelling to Lidcombe. This is because as Lidcombe trains traverse Sefton Park Junction, they switch from being down trains to up trains and also change run numbers. The train's systems will only display stops for the current run number and so will not display any stops after Birrong until after leaving Birrong station.

After Sydney Metro City & Southwest opened, Birrong was no longer be an interchange. It is now only be served on shuttle T6 services between Lidcombe and Bankstown, with Regents Park to replace it as the interchange between the two lines.
