Metro City & Southwest Line
Punchbowl
Bankstown
Terminus

Bankstown railway station is on the Bankstown Line of the Sydney Trains network. It serves the suburb of Bankstown. Entry to the station is provided on North Terrace and South Terrace in the centre of Bankstown. Located near the station on the South Terrace entrance side is the Bankstown Bus Interchange, Saigon Place and Bankstown Sports Club, and near the North Terrace entrance is Canterbury-Bankstown Council and Bankstown Central Shopping Centre.

Bankstown is staffed 24 hours everyday and is fully wheelchair accessible. Bankstown is one of a very few stations on the Sydney Trains network to have taller jump-proof Opal gates. One gateline uses these gates, while the other gateline uses the older Cityrail era gates.[1]

History[]

Bankstown station opened on 14 April 1909, when the Bankstown line was extended from Belmore. It served as the terminus of the line until it was extended to Regents Park on the Main South line in 1928. Opposite platform 2 lies a parcel platform that was used by Electric Parcels Vans until 1966.

In December 2013, planning approval was granted for an upgrade project including the installation of new stairs, ramps, canopies and ticket barriers. Work commenced in July 2014 and was completed by September 2015.

Metro Works[2][]

In 2024 Bankstown station will become the south-western terminus of the combined Sydney Metro Northwest and City & Southwest automated rapid transit rail network (the end of a line of 31 automated metro rapid transit stations to that point, making it the biggest public transport project in the history of Australian rail) which will replace the original Bankstown railway line between Bankstown and Sydenham.

Bankstown will be upgraded to a train and metro interchange. The existing island platform will be kept for Sydney Trains services towards Lidcombe via Regents Park. It was originally proposed that the island platform would just be extended east to create two more platforms for Southwest Metro. The plan was changed in May 2020 to side platforms for the metro, with a new concourse and entrances in between the train and metro parts of the station. An underground station box will also be preserved for future extension of the metro towards Liverpool.

Platforms and Services[]

Bankstown is a major station on the Bankstown line. All Bankstown line trains will stop here, with most trains timetabled to dwell for a few minutes.

There is a turnback in between the two main lines west of the station. It is rarely used, apart from a few late night Lidcombe-Bankstown shuttles. A crossover east of the station was removed over the 2021-2022 New Year shutdown to allow for metro construction.
